Aquabumps hits Mentawais
submitted 23rd April 2008
From 26th April to 6th May 2008 we'll be broadcasting Aquabumps updates from remote Indonesia - more specifically the MENTAWAI ISLANDS. The islands are located 90 nautical miles off Sumatra (Port Padang). There ain't much out there, people are scarce unlike the rest of Indonesia, but WAVES A PLENTY. This time of year is when Indo starts to score large swells from the roaring forties south of West oz. Basically a big swell hitting Margaret River will arrive perfectly groomed in the Mentawais within a few days. So here we are...6 surfers, a 50 foot stink boat (MV Tengirri), a genius chef, couple other laky staff, 4 boards each and a whole lotta time to surf - oooohhhhh yeah...(ok, and some shooting pics). Special thanks to Telstra Satellite Services for sponsoring this trip. The updates will be via Satellite off the roof of the boat (there ain't no internet at sea baby) right next to my buddies in dugout canoes...so let's hope we get a couple of decent swells. See you back in Bondi soon.

I haven't seen a mate of mine (Damo) for weeks. He's gone underground and now is addicted to updating his blog which is dedicated to surfcraft from 1975 - 1985. You've never seen anyone get more excited about a Cheyne Horan Laser Zap. He's a freak. see blog

Today is a big day for Aquabumps for two reasons:
a) we've just clocked another year and Aquabumps has turned 9...no party this year kids (not like last year), wait for 10. That's 9 years of early morning shooting and ramble. 9 years of good folk reading this little corner of the web...thanks to everyone for tuning in (28,000 daily readers) - I still can't believe so many people read Aquabumps with what started as just a little email between mates. Special thanks to Returnity who push this email newsletter out. Thanks Maddog, Ness, Jamie, Mikala, Mischee, Zac, Debs, Brett (for the Fuji gx617 loan), all the advertisers, Aquatech, Carl Woodward, Meescha (legal), Kelvinator (host master) and all the swimmercams for being good sports.

and...

b) and - to celebrate - we're now shooting with the salubrious new Canon 1ds Mark III. Yes camera geeks I got one...all 21.1 mega pixels of it...and the waiting list is worth it...and the focus is incredible...and the colours insane...and if you play your cards right you might even be able to touch it.

My mate Dave got on TV once when he was 18. He thought he was a complete legend. Nice footage of him leaving the court house after being busted for stealing and burning a car. Nice one Dave. Aquabumps was on TV today – the SUNDAY program to be exact. No, not leaving a courthouse…but a feel-good profile piece on this little kreepy corner of the internet called Aquabumps – a slice of the ocean to keep you going in between sets…something ya ma would be proud of. chunky
This big chunky swell is kinda wasted on us in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. Nowhere is really working despite being consistently large. Bondi was 8 foot this morning and messy...I saw a couple of waves that looked very large and could have done with a wider lens to capture the action. Only 1 guy out at Ben Buckler paddling for bombie burgers. Really cold morning with dark grey skies. Manly would probably have a clean little wave, not big enough for the harbour...limited options. Surf will improve in a few days when the winds are more favourable and the swell lining up better. Fortunately I saw plenty of sand moving around on the beach - hopefully created a new variety of banks :: uge
